Sharp decline in hazelnut prices frustrate Turkish growers

Hazelnut prices declined sharply in a matter of 2 weeks from 4 USD per kg to 3 USD per kg in local trade halls. Growers were frustrated with heavy price fluctuations in hazelnut.

Some growers note that in-shell hazelnuts are currently sold for 5 USD per kg to the European market but added that since European customers are the main buyer, they control the price levels. The growers argue that Turkish hazelnut exporters have to diversify their customer portfolio to include more customers from countries such as Japan, India, China, and Central Asian countries such as Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to improve their price levels and to prevent the control on prices imposed by European buyers.
