In W31, 2024, Alaska's wild salmon catches reveal notable declines in key species. Year-to-date keta (chum) salmon catches are down 38% compared to last year, driving up prices for 2024 keta. Similarly, pink salmon harvests are down by 63% year-over-year (YoY). For the 2024 season, the keta/chum harvest has reached 44% of the projected total, while only 18% of the pink salmon quota has been realized. Sockeye salmon is the exception, with harvests surpassing initial projections at 101% of the target. Additionally, salmon fishing has been sluggish across the Bering Sea in Russia, further impacting the global salmon market.
