On March 13, 2024, the Shanghai office of Agricultural Affairs in Thailand's Department of Agriculture released a report on the "Fresh Longan Trade Situation in China 2023 Summary."

In 2023, China's longan planting area totaled about 1.85 million rai or 731.2 thousand acres, slightly down by 0.69%. However, the total longan production rose by 55.60% compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 1.91 million tons. China permits the import of fresh longans from six countries, including Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

In 2023, China only imported longans from three countries: Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The total import volume was 344.5 thousand tons, marking a 10% decrease compared to the previous year. Thailand was the largest supplier, with 327.2 thousand tons, accounting for 95% of all fresh longan imports. Cambodia followed with 16.7 thousand tons, and Vietnam with 497 tons.

In 2023, the fresh longan trade in China was slow, with low prices due to increased local production. Chinese longan production surged by 55.6% in 2023, leading to very low prices. However, Thai longans commanded higher prices, making it challenging for imports from Thailand to compete in the Chinese market. Additionally, China's economic conditions were unfavorable due to the impact of COVID-19, further affecting the market.
