The Chilean Red Globe is usually the most popular overseas red grape variety in Poland. However, the demand for the product dropped significantly in May due to the low quality of the fruit and customers' preference for the strawberries over the grapes during the season.
One of the suppliers is selling loose carry bags in 8.2kg boxes at around EUR 8.70 (USD 9.35), while another supplier is selling at EUR 7.70 per box (USD 8.28). Buyers even refuse to take consignment offers. There is a considerable amount of returns from major retail chains in the country as Greek strawberries entered the market with a high volume from the end of April up till now. The buyers at the wholesale market would choose strawberries over grapes during the season.
On top of it, the Polish strawberry already appeared in the market and it will be the most demanded fruit among local consumers throughout June. Surprisingly, green grapes varieties such as Thompson are often asked for by buyers for loose carry bags in 4.5kg boxes and there is not enough supply in the Dutch open spot market to meet the demand. Moreover, the first Sicilian grapes arrived in the Polish market, which will further decline the demand for non-green grapes overseas varieties.
