The European Commission's “Farm to fork” strategy includes the development of a contingency plan to ensure the EU's food supply and food security in the event of future crises.

Based on the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic and other recent events, the Commission intends to develop a set of procedures to be followed in times of crisis. This includes establishing an EU crisis response mechanism to prepare and respond effectively to critical events that could threaten the EU's food security.

The roadmap for this EU food contingency plan has just been published for consultation on the Commission's Better Regulation portal.

This consultation is addressed to the following stakeholders: operators in the food supply chain (producers, fishermen, traders, processors, distributors, retailers, food service providers) and their associations; other interested parties with an interest in the operation of the food supply chain (suppliers, transport operators, insurance companies, among others); consumers and consumer groups; civil society organizations; Representatives of Member States and competent authorities; international organizations and third countries; and the scientific community and policy support bodies.

The consultation is open for feedback until January 13, 2021.
