Czech poppy producers and exporters have largely halted exports to Russia, one of its largest markets accounting for about 30% of exports, in protest of the Russia-Ukraine war. Since the start of the war, Czech white poppy growers have decreased the volume grown for the 2022 harvest by 35-40%. This resulted in a lower yield for the 2022 season accompanied by high prices.

Other factors contributing to the high prices are the 17% inflation in the Czech Republic and high gas and electricity prices due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Blue poppy prices increased more than 40% during the month of July with white poppy also experiencing significant price increases on an already limited volume. The high prices and low volumes will affect large parts of the European market as the Czech Republic is the EU's largest exporter.
