Data released by the Central Bank of Kenya shows exports of vegetables, fruits, and cut flowers decreased during the export period running from January to August 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. Fresh produce export value fell 9.9% YoY, from USD 769M in 2021 to USD 717M in 2022, while export volume fell 13.12%, from 427,627MT in 2021 to 371,128MT in 2022. The decline in export volumes in 2022 has been attributed to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the rise in inflation rates that have resulted in disruptions in the global market, and the ban on avocado exports by the Horticultural Directorate in the first quarter of 2022. The ban was aimed at preventing the harvest and export of immature fruits that would have jeopardised the market.
