Since October 2022, the wholesale price of fresh garlic in Japan has declined. As of February 2023, the situation has not changed, and it is forecasted to continue for the upcoming months. The decline is a result of the favorable weather in major producing areas. Thus, more domestically produced garlic is circulating in the market than usual. And the quantity of imported garlic, mainly from China and Spain, has remained the same as in previous years, spurring an oversupply along with domestic production. On February 9th, the wholesale price of domestic garlic averaged at USD 9.88/kg, about 30% lower than the same period in 2022. The unit price of imported garlic stood around the same as in 2022, at about USD 2.2/kg.
