Domestically produced "Satsuma" will be available in Japan until mid-February 2023, after which the distribution of high-grade varieties with high ball unit prices begins. Unseasonable weather has persisted in major growing areas this 2023, and the production volumes of most varieties declined. As a result, trading has already occurred at higher prices than in previous years. For instance, the "Shiranuhi" variety stood at USD 2.41/kg as of March 9, 2023, but USD 2.01/kg on the same day of the previous year. Such varieties compete with common oranges, and it could increase demand for imported oranges.
