In 2016, Italy drastically reduced the use of palm oil for processed food preparation until it was almost banned in products. Due to the presence of this oil in many different products, with daily use, Italy made several informative campaigns saying people that the high consumption caused healthy diseases, due to a large consumption, mainly for children (being the palm oil widely used for cookies and snacks, like Mulino Bianco), and also, the production of this kind of oil used to have a substantial impact on the environment which needed to be reduced.

Most of the processing industries changed recipes, including sunflower oil as a substitute for palm oil, and those who kept producing with palm oil chose only RSPO certified products. Due to the war in Ukraine and the high scarcity of sunflower oil, a trend reversal will be observed for which palm oil will replace the sunflower oil, with a high demand of RSPO certified products from Italy.
