Exports in the Portuguese agrifood sector are growing. The positive data were revealed by the National Statistics Institute (INE), which showed a 10.4% growth in August 2020 when compared to August 2019. Also in the accumulated, that is, from January 1, 2020 to 31 August 2020, when compared to the same period last year, the data is positive with an increase in exports by 3.2%.

The exports of the agri-food complex accumulated in August 2020 registered a a growth of 146 million euros, from 4 297 million euros to 4 443 million euros.

Evaluating these data of the agri-food complex by type of product, we find that "live animals" are the agricultural product that grows most: 98.1% in August when compared to August 2019 and 15.5% in the accumulated (from January to August ). “Meat and edible meat offal” follow, with an increase of 34.7% (August - same year) and 11.8% (from January to August).

The Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, considers these data "very positive, reflecting the resilience and work capacity of Portuguese farmers and the entire agrifood sector." These data demonstrate how the role of the common agricultural policy (CAP) and the measures that were possible to implement during the pandemic were fundamental to guarantee the treasury and working capital for producers, as well as to create predictability for the sector.
