However, American cattle producers, who have endured decades of adversity, should not be sacrificed for larger geopolitical gains. Expanding beef imports from Argentina would threaten the very foundation of U.S. beef production and the heart of rural America. American producers would lose out in any deal with Argentina. Today’s beef prices are not a byproduct of rampant inflation or market manipulation. They are the result of years of industry decline, a 75-year low in the domestic cow herd, and a sharp rise in farmers’ production costs.
