Mozambique is one of the world’s biggest cashew producers. It is estimated that Mozambique produced approximately 160 thousands MT of cashew nuts in 2021/2022 season, which represents an increase of 12% compared to the last year. To promote the production, the Mozambique Government established a minimum price for the value paid to the producers of EUR 0.57 per kg. One of the main producing regions is Cabo Delgado, but the terrorism in the area is threatening the cashew production and the supply for several countries like Portugal accordingly as Mozambique has been trading cashews with Portugal for decades.

The President of the Lusophone International Movement (MIL) made a statement on 13 January 2022, asking Portugal, Brazil and other countries that belong to the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLC) along with the United Nations, to help Mozambique maintain the peace in the region. Portugal has been collaborating in Mozambique in more than 15 military operations to maintain the peace, but it doesn't seem enough, so an international action might be needed.
