Despite the shortage, part of export sales of fresh cockles is being controlled by authorities due to illegal harvestings in the Ria Formosa, Algarve Region. To cope with the shortage, individual catchers and fishermen are fishing for cockles at the minimum legal size, mixing with “normal size” cockles.
