The western conifer seed bug is responsible for this year's non-existent yield. This plague, which has been affecting pine trees for the past eight years, has also drastically reduced yields, and this year it reached a breaking point according to the Castillan Association for Pine Nut Producers (ACEP).

This year for the first time, there was no harvest, and only a few companies ran operations. Many companies have decided to close down and others are importing pine trees from Portugal or Andalucia, however, this year has already impacted the sector enormously.
