In India, sesame seed prices for various grades across the markets continued to decrease in the past few weeks as domestic demand has not picked up as expected. Festive season last-minute purchases of sesame seed are likely to increase in the coming weeks as the “festival of harvest’’ is less than a month away from now and the beginning of the winter season in North India. The newfound virus omicron is spreading fast across Indian states, with cases reaching close to 100. There are various views about the newfound Omicron virus, and it is still not clear about the impact of this and how it will affect in general. It spreads much faster than expected, especially in the United Kingdom and other European countries. India accounts for nearly 50 percent of sesame seed exports of the UK and EU countries. Hence any travel restriction across the EU/Britain and vice versa to contain the spread of omicron may lead to short-term supply disturbances.

Indian crop production is significantly less as expected during this monsoon season, as it has rained well in all of the southern states of India, especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra. Thus one can expect reasonably good crops across those states, wherein the new crop is due in early Feb 2022. However, the overall crop size is smaller in number, which could primarily cater the domestic needs.
Hence considering all the factors mentioned above, it can be foreseen that the price for sesame seeds of various grades remain steady at current levels or may not fall much.
