Italian durum wheat production decreased by 150,000MT in 2022 compared to 2021 despite an increase of 40,000 planted hectares. This is mainly due to the drought in Italy in the summer of 2022, expensive energy costs, and an increase in fertiliser prices. Over the past six years, about 35,000 hectares of durum wheat have been lost in Italy as more profitable crops like soy have taken its place.
