On March 6, 2024, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) in Tokyo, Japan, Thai trade representatives disclosed that they had requested Japan to increase the quota for importing Thai golden bananas from 8 thousand metric tons (mt) to 100 thousand mt. These bananas would be exported under the Thailand-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA), exempting them from taxes. The Minister of MAFF is expected to approve the expansion of the quota request, with implementation slated for Apr-24.
