Japan's avocado imports have dropped sharply since the beginning of 2022. According to data released by the Japanese government, the total import volume from January to August this year was 33,347 tons, a decrease of about 40% compared to the same period last year. According to wholesalers, this is due to two main factors.
First, the unit price of Mexican avocados soared compared to the previous year, hitting an all-time high in May about 20% higher than at the same time last year. The second reason is that retail prices have risen along with this price increase, and general consumers' willingness to purchase avocados has been greatly impaired. Although the unit price of imports has stabilized recently, retailers have not lowered their selling prices much. As a result, general consumers continue to refrain from purchasing avocados.
