Squash is grown locally in Japan, particularly in Hokkaido, and gradually as the season ends, there will be a shorter supply. The market share will be dominated by imported squash from March through May 2023. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that major squash-sourcing countries like New Zealand and Mexico won't be able to produce enough in 2023 due to issues specific to each origin. New Zealand is encountering drastically low crops this season, with approximately a 40% drop from normal production because of floods and storms. Mexico has fewer crops this season as well. Based on financial reasons raised by Japanese buyers, the weaker Japanese Yen has lowered pre-order quantity to define overall cultivation volume. Importers have started to look for alternative sources of supply to secure as much volume as possible, but the initial response from the supply side has not been favorable since they may face difficulties in even fulfilling the volume to pre-ordered clients.
