Mandarin orange from China is selling very well in Jakarta, importers receiving positive feedbacks from multiple modern trade channels such as regular, premium supermarkets and trendy fruit shops since early 22 Jan to date. The ever-popular ponkam and shatang lead the sales, with nanfeng, wokam, and relatively new chunjian and kumquat varieties becoming more popular despite the higher price.
One of the importers predicts ponkam sales to grow at least by 5% compared to previous sales. The upcoming Chinese spring festival coincides with a positive spending mood from the market following New Year's Day celebration.
Oranges are sold in multiple packagings. For usual ones, the price ranges from USD 1.6 per kg to USD 3 per kg, and for premium shopping bags and decoration boxes, the price ranges from USD 15 to USD 20 per 4kg box. The sales will be strong until mid-February when the leftover is sold at heavy discounts.
Meanwhile, Chunjian orange, a relatively new variant to the market, is very potential despite its price, which is USD 4 per kg, and shorter shelf period.
