New Caledonia is an overseas French colony in the southwest Pacific Ocean (population: 271,960). Fruits and Vegetables on the island are becoming rarer and more expensive on the stalls of traders, at the markets, and in supermarkets. This is due to La Niña and heavy rains that have impacted the area, accentuating soaring prices.
The closest markets of Australia and New Zealand are also experiencing severe tensions in prices. For instance, New Caledonia was affected by the “La Niña” problem and the lack of workforce linked to the Covid-19 crisis. The resulting effects are that the production volume of fruits and vegetables is much lower than originally projected.
To conclude, out of around 1,000-1,500 MT of projected imports per month in New Caledonia that were made since the beginning of the year, not even 500MT have been imported.
