Total Portuguese production has set a new record by reaching around 180,000 MT. Although this means that Portugal can be self-sufficient in terms of its consumption.
Besides, olive oil mills have been struggling with a problem, olive marc. Due to this factor some olive mills, mainly in the Alentejo and Trás-os-Montes regions, had to shut down production as they had no room to store any more olive marc.

The solution to take care of this residue is to move it to some Spanish extracting companies but, for sure that product price will increase as it is an expensive solution. Its usage as a compost is another way of disposal and engaging on the trendy circular economy but, again, Portuguese bureaucracy keeps on setting it back due to some harsh environmental laws. Portuguese government, after next weekend elections, will have to face this problem and prepare for a real and cheap solution. Expectations towards 2022 is that export might slow down as olive oil prices are very high.
