Pulses and legumes prices hiked in September in Turkey

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, prices of various foodstuffs such as pulses, legumes, and chicken eggs have drastically increased in September this year compared to the same month last year. Lentil retail prices have increased by almost 49% to $1,24 per kg, white beans increased by 35% to $2,08 per kg, rice prices have seen an increase by almost 19% and reached $1,37 per kg while chicken egg prices have jumped by 30% exceeding $0,07 per piece. The reasons behind the price hikes are explained by rising global demand for staple food products such as pulses, grains, and legumes as well as the devaluation of the local currency in Turkey against the US dollar, therefore the extended dependency on staple food items imports from other countries.
