Chard is able to give economic satisfaction. Gallerani (Coprob): "Many Italian producers are at the forefront and the results confirm this". For chard, making 100 MT / ha of sucrose just a few years ago seemed like a mirage. Now this is a level reached by several manufacturers. Which even look far beyond, up to the 'incredible' 200 MT / ha of sucrose.

Supply chain and trust
The difficulties due to the concomitant of low prices and adverse climate have in fact stimulated the sector to fight with determination for the maintenance of the sector in Italy thanks to the trust of the beet growers in the Cooperative's technicians, supported by its research and experimentation division (Beta) which, together with agro-mechanics, seeders, producers of technical means, they have done an incredible job of building a new 4.0 precision beet growing, including organic. The future of beet can already be seen today: a reality that makes use of a much more performing genetics that allows greater production, tolerances and simplification of weeding, new lines of protection with more and more means of natural origin and targeted nutrition with lesser quantities which allow to obtain more quality and more respect for the environment.

Sustainability certification
2020 was the year of the start of the first 5,000 ha of the SQNPI sustainable supply chain which on 16 December obtained the certification of conformity from the control body. The new ambitious project of growth and innovation of Italian beet growing aims, in the next 3-5 years, at a sustainable zero-residue supply chain, digitally traced from the field to the table to give distinctiveness and value in respect of the environment measured in terms of less impact and lower emissions.

The technical path
From the point of view of the technical path to be implemented directly on the crop, it is first of all necessary to pay great attention to the variety choice best suited to the type of soil and in this regard genetic improvement has made giant steps such as genetic tolerances to rhizomania and nematodes, but especially the most recent one to "cercostress" in response to climate change.
After that, crop uniformity and water-nutritional balance are required, through careful irrigation interventions and targeted fertilization plans based on preventive soil analyzes. Weed management and monitoring of the presence of harmful insects, as well as the initiation of fungicidal applications assisted by the use of bio-stimulants according to forecasting models, with an eye on the eradication period.

Obviously, greater care must be taken for the second part of the campaign, where greater protection of the photosynthesizing foliage apparatus is required, which can lead to the target of 20 MT of sucrose per hectare. During the first years of the new millennium, the slogan "20-2020 Objective" was launched in Europe for sugar beet growing, that is to achieve production of 20 MT of sucrose in the year 2020. It seemed like a mirage, but in some cases it has become a reality.
