The 2023 sardine (Sardina pilchardus) season in Portugal concluded in Nov-23, revealing smaller sizes averaging fewer than 14 pieces per kilogram compared to the previous year. The scarcity of large-sized sardines, typically over 10 to 12 pieces per kilogram (kg), led to a surge in prices above USD 1.67/kg (prices EXW) in W51, significantly higher than the previous year's range of USD 1.39 to 1.45/kg. Conversely, smaller sizes remained available in decent quantities.
