Europe is facing a general shortage of potatoes. For example, France had the lowest harvest in years, primarily due to lower planted area driven by elevated production costs. Similarly, in Poland many farmers limited the extent of their planting, resulting in a smaller harvest while others abandoned potatoes in favour of more profitable crops like corn. As a result, there is not enough raw material for Polish suppliers to offer French fries to buyers outside of existing clients and contracts. The situation could change in November as Polish potatoes come into production.
