Some Ghanaian cocoa farmers are demanding a 100% increase in the farmgate price for cocoa beans for the 2022/2023 harvest season, which is expected to be announced by the government in the near future. With agro-inputs and chemical cost both domestically and internationally skyrocketing and domestic inflation hovering around 33.9%, Ghanaian farmers are demanding for the farmgate or producer price of the new cocoa harvest season to be increased by 100% to reflect the present economic reality. The last producer or farmgate price for the cocoa bean was USD 66/64kg which the farmers have been trading with since 2020. Farmers are threatening to smuggle the crops to neighbouring Ivory Coast where the producer price of the cocoa bean is higher if their demands are not met.
