Although South Africa is not well-known for its coffee production, the production voulme has been steadily increased. The South African coffee market has increased at an annual growth rate of 13.3% from 556,000 of 60kg bags in 2014/15 season to more than 900,000 of 60kg bags in 2020/21 season. South Africans only consume 0.4% of locally produced coffee, while the rest is imported. The high cost of harvesting and the low selling price of raw coffee beans make it challenging to compete with other countries. Coffee production in South Africa has growth potential, but access to new genetics remains a challenge and stunts better production numbers.
