For the 2022/23 sunflower seed marketing season in South Africa, the total supply of sunflower seed is projected at 891,340MT. This includes a 31,790MT opening stock level on March 1, 2022, 845,550MT from local commercial deliveries, 7,000MT from imported sunflower seeds, and a surplus of 7,000MT.
The total sunflower seed demand, including domestic consumption and exports, is projected at 832,350MT. This includes 1,600MT processed for human consumption, 6,000MT processed for animal consumption, 820,000MT for crush (oil and oilcake), 1,200MT withdrawn by producers, 400MT released to end consumers, 2,300 MT of seed for planting purposes, and a balancing figure of 500MT (net receipts and net dispatches). A quantity of 350MT is estimated for exports for the 2022/23 marketing season.
The projected closing stock level for February 28, 2023 is estimated at 58,990MT, which represents available stock levels for 26 days given that the average processed quantity is 68,967MT per month.
