At the end of September 2022, the cost of domestically produced asparagus was USD 8.29/kg, higher than the average unit price of imported asparagus of USD 3.56/kg. The Japanese market prefers to purchase domestically produced asparagus due to its quality with thicker stems, softer, and better taste despite higher prices. In 2021, 56% of the imported asparagus came from Mexico, and this country is forecasted to continue to be the leading supplier market for Japan in the upcoming seasons.
