The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) of Thailand reported that Thai rice production is forecasted to decrease by 871 thousand metric tons (mt) for the 2023/24 harvest season due to El Niño weather. The country's rice cultivation area is expected to be 9.98 million hectares (62.4 million rai), a 0.96% year-over-year (YoY) decrease, and the harvest area is estimated at 9.53 million ha (59.6 million rai), a 0.53% YoY decrease. This reduction in cultivation area is due to adverse weather patterns, delayed rainfall, and the heightened risk of disease and pest infestations. Rice prices have increased for Thai hom mali fragrant rice paddy, glutinous rice paddy, and 15% moisture content rice since the beginning of 2022. Thai rice exports have also increased in quantity and value compared to the same period in 2022.
