Italy usually stands in the top three producers of hazelnuts in the whole world. However, the crop yield in 2021 has been heavily affected by adverse climate conditions. Spring frost and summer drought has affected the production, and the market suffers from the scarcity of Italian hazelnuts.

This has favored the Turkish importers as Turkish hazelnuts are considered a more competitive alternative. In this context, the prices of local varieties such as Nocciola Piemonte Igp, Tonda di Giffoni Igp, and Tonda Gentile Romana Dop have increased by around 20-30%. At the same time, the recently passed EU Regulation (EU) 2021/2246 of 15 December 2021 has eased the official controls on aflatoxins for hazelnuts from Turkey.

Based on all the factors mentioned above, it is predicted that the market will be dominated by Turkish hazelnuts in 2022.
