The supply of melons being imported to Holland remains still strong. Although Russia is mainly of the market, supply stays limited due to shipping space and logistic issues. Big importers are struggling to get their programs fulfilled.
Moreover, due to the increasing gas prices, southern European growers are expected to continue longer with vegetables due to the good prices and the delayed production of Dutch vegetables, because growers started later. What is available, is sold for high prices. Since growing vegetables is more profitable than growing melons, most Almeria growers just want to plant the seeds if the harvest is presold against fixed prices, so only in fixed programs. As a result, the overseas season will most likely be extended a few weeks.
