The UK government has announced the creation of a quota of 260 thousand tonnes of raw cane sugar with zero tariff, which will come into effect on January 1, with a duration of 12 months. The tariff applied to imported sugar so far is the same as that of the European Union, of 339 euros per ton. With the UK leaving the European Union, the country has independence to apply its own tariffs and will start to charge 280 pounds per ton of extra-quota sugar.

According to the Brazilian Union of the Sugarcane Industry (Unica), the measure increases access to the market that was mostly supplied by European Union products.
