Although Colombia has more than 2,500 hectares planted in wheat, this area does not even supply 1% of the national consumption. Thus, 99% of the wheat consumed by the milling industry to produce flour is imported. When the conflict started, a concern arose among the general population due to the possibility of shortage of this important product.
The National Federation of Millers (Fedemol) issued a statement explaining that wheat is imported from Canada and the United States with 0% tariff. From Canada 67% is imported and from the United States 29%. However, in 2020 the Government issued a decree allowing wheat from Russia and Ukraine to be imported with 0% tariff, but in reality 1% of the wheat used in the country is imported from Russia and 0.7% from Ukraine.
