While Turkey's banana production is increasing, imports are decreasing

Turkey, which met most of its banana demand with imports in the past years, has started to produce 77% of its own. 4 international companies, Dole Food, Chiquita, Fresh Del Monte and Fyfess, used to have a large share in the world banana trade. However, the market share of these four companies decreased from 62% in 2002 to 45% in 2017, which implies that corporate dominance is declining. The reason is retail stores, especially in the USA and European Union countries, which supply bananas directly from smaller-scale wholesalers or producers.
