The pear industry in South Africa, although small in comparison to world production figures, is a key supplier of pears to a number of international markets. South Africa is well suited for pear production, as pear trees, grow best in temperate zones – regions with cold winters and moderate summers. For this reason, South African pears are produced in the Western Cape & Eastern Cape regions of the country (due to their favorable climatic conditions for pear production), with over 50% produced in the Western Cape. South Africa’s main pear cultivars are Packham’s Triumph which accounts for 34% produced, followed by Forelle at 26%, Williams Bon Chretien at 19% and Abate Fetel at 6%.
