Tridge offers high-quality Plantain sourced from Ecuador. Plantain has been used since ancient times in a wide variety of dishes. It is used as a food similar to potatoes. The plantain is consumed mainly cooked when it is still green. It is cooked boiled, fried, steamed, or in other processing formulas such as chips (patacones, chifles, tostones). Plantain in Ecuador is a whole year seasonality product. During the 52 weeks of the year, plantain producers cultivate their plantations parallel with the harvest laborers. The wintertime is when more barraganete is produced. From January to April or May, depending on rainfall. In June, production decreases but the supply and demand cause prices to skyrocket. Barraganete, the exported variety, this type of plantain is between 22 and 30 centimeters long and 2 to 5 centimeters wide. The plantain plant takes eight months from the first leaf to the first harvest. The plant requires 60 cubic meters of water per day for each hectare. In El Carmen (Manabí) 10 tons are produced per hectare. The export destinations are the US, Europe, and the product is being shipped to Asia. Ecuador remains to be the No. 1 supplier of plantain worldwide, delivering the highest quality plantain and attending the top and most demanding markets such as the USA, Spain, and The United Kingdom.
