Over 800 grower members in California, Arizona, and New Mexico are represented by the non-profit trade association known as American Pistachio Growers (APG).APG is run by growers through a democratically elected board of directors. It is entirely funded by growers and independent processors who want to spread the word about the health benefits of pistachios grown in the United States.
California has planted over 312,000 acres in 22 counties, accounting for 99 percent of the total. The annual "farm gate value"* of pistachios contributes more than $16 million to the economies of Arizona and New Mexico and more than $1.6 billion to the California economy. There are 950 producers in the United States.
