McCarthy's has a long and illustrious history, spanning six generations and more than 135 years in business.
Their company was established in 1877 as a fruit and vegetable stand on London's Drury Lane by Thomas McCarthy. In 1903, Thomas's son Daniel opened a stall in Great Yarmouth's bustling marketplace before joining the Navy during the First World War, leaving his mother to run the stall. The family spent their summer vacations there. McCarthy's was established as a limited liability company on May 5, 1939, after the couple expanded into wholesaling.
Dan's son John eventually took over management of the business in the early 1960s, and the company continued to grow, opening several depots throughout Norfolk. Before retiring in 1995, John oversaw the construction of a new warehouse in Norwich and relocated the core of the business there, handing control to the current directors; Martin, Simon, David, and Peter were his sons.
Daniel, the great-great-great-grandson of Thomas McCarthy, joined the company in 2009, followed by Joe, Sam, Annabel, and Josh; marking the family's six-generation business.
