On Urk, a former island in the Zuiderzee, is where you may find Isola Fish. In the past, Urk subsisted off the sea. With the aid of its own fishing fleet, a thriving North Sea fish commerce was made possible. Since the Afsluitdijk separated the Wadden Sea from the IJsselmeer in 1932, a dike has linked Urk to the mainland since 1939, and the Noordoostpolder was dry milled in 1942, Urk is no longer considered to be an island. Although Urk currently sits on the IJsselmeer and has a harbor of its own, the UK-based Urker fishing fleet is now active on other global fishing grounds. This serves as Urk's main economic foundation thanks to its own fish auction, fishing, processing, and trade activities in fish and fish products.
