KalaValtanen has strong roots in professional fishing in the Luvian archipelago in western Finland. Genealogy knows him seven generations of fishermen, one of whom traced his way to her Brändö in the Åland Islands.
Our fishing, aquaculture and fish processing know-how has been passed down from one decade to his next. In the 18th century, the archipelago was a self-sufficient economy with fishing, sealing and agriculture. In the 1900s, herring driftnets, or rack fishing, became more popular on the high seas. Gradually, herring fishing became the basis of Kalavartanen's professional fishing. At the same time, a wide variety of scales were caught with axes, hooks and nets. The fish was sold directly from the pot to fish wholesalers, Orlando's swamps, and county residents.
The challenges of the 1980s, such as fishing regulations and increasing seal populations, demanded new solutions from the industry to carry them into the future. We started farming rainbow trout in 1987 and specialized in farming whitefish in the early 2000s. Luvian Lampoori continues to serve as a hub for local whitefish and rainbow trout farming. Thanks to our good cooperation network, we are able to bring clean and safe products to the market from Finland and around the world. Our new Honcaluoto factory in Pori offers energy efficient hygienic facilities across a range of products.
