The great-grandparents of the twins started a family farm in Lodi in the 1870s where they grew non-irrigated watermelons. Year after year, the farm expanded, and by 1916, the family had bought their first vineyard. The father of the twins learned the skills he needed on this farm to continue the family's agricultural heritage. The twins' father enlarged their farm to encompass the DeVries Road Ranch and the River Ranch, where they grew up assisting in farm chores and enjoying the surrounding area.
The twins started their agricultural venture after their father sold them a little vineyard after they returned from college. They established their lives as neighbors, reared their families, and rediscovered their love for one other at the River Ranch, where they enjoyed innumerable childhood adventures.
