On October 13, 1853, Lillie Langtry, whose real name was Emilie Charlotte Le Breton, was born on Jersey, a French island off the coast of Normandy. She was one of seven children with six boys and the Dean of Jersey's lone daughter.
Edward Langtry, an affluent 30-year-old Irish landowner, and widower wed Lillie. They relocated to London, where she subsequently started her acting career.
At the Haymarket Theatre in London, Lillie played the lead role in her debut play. She gave birth to her daughter Jeanne Marie Langtry in the same year, however, it has been claimed that Prince Louis of Battenberg, who wed Princess Victoria, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, in 1884, was actually the child's father and not her husband. Lillie left Jeanne in the care of her mother.
