Placerville, California's Lava Cap is a family-run winery. At a unique location in the heart of the Sierra Foothills, the Jones family planted their first vines in 1981 and established the winery in 1986. The location was specially chosen by the scientists' family because of the exceptional volcanic soil's suitability for cultivating grapes for fine wines. They gave their new company the name "Lava Cap" after this special "lava cap," where their grapes thrive in the volcanic soil, warmed by the foothill sunshine and cooled by the soft Sierra night breezes.
