New Zealand's Greenshell Mussels have been judged one of the most ocean-friendly seafoods in the world by the USA’s highly respected Blue Ocean Institute. Greenshell Mussels feed by filtering algae and other plankton, thereby improving the quality of the surrounding water. Our mussels are grown on ropes suspended in coastal water, which causes little habitat disruption. Our seed comes from wild collection, and there are no major concerns about depleting broodstock. New Zealand Greenshell Mussels need no artificial feeding and are free of growth promoters or additives such as fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides. Our Littleneck Clams come from sustainably managed beds. The areas where our clams are wild caught have been successfully managed under a government quota system since 2002 and fish stocks are considered to be healthy.
Ready to Heat or Eat!
Our Greenshell Mussel product is different in that our mussels are vacuum packed and lightly cooked within the pouch meaning the product is already ready to heat or eat straight from the pouch. This cuts out all the preparation or wastage compared to other shellfish products, while still enhancing the quality and flavour as the mussels are kept wholeshell. Keeping our product wholeshell means that the mussel meat is protected from drying out like your standard half shell which often has freezer burn and no natural mussel taste. In addition to having the advantage of being whole shell our mussels are also cooked lightly in the pouch, this means that mussels are kept in their own natural juices, keeping the meat succulent and tasting fresh like live.
