Saboor Chatoor (Private) Limited

In 1915, Mr. Sabor Chathor came to Colombo from Bombay and established Sabor Chathor Company with limited funds. Saboor Chatoor and Company first started importing goods from India. With moderate growth in the 1920s and his 30s, exports to the Indian and European markets began. Business activities were suspended due to World War II. After the war ended in 1945, the company concentrated on exporting spices. In the late 1940s, Saboor Chatoor & Co. became a major exporter of all kinds of agricultural products, especially spices. As the business grew, Saboor Chatoor & Co. was incorporated as a partnership in his 1949. In 1956, it was incorporated as a private company under the name and style of Saboor Chatoor & Co. Ltd.

In 1980, the company moved to a less developed area where it built a complex with extensive storage facilities and offices. In 2008, Mr. Sabor Chathor changed the company name to Saboor Chatoor (Private) Ltd due to changes in the Company Law. Gulam Chatoor, current Chairman of Saboor Chatoor (Private) Ltd., is also Founding Chairman of the Spice and Related Products Producers and Traders Association (SAPPTA). He is also a member of the SAPPTA Management Board. Gulam Chatoor is also a spokesperson for the spice industry and is frequently consulted by the Sri Lankan government on issues affecting all exports.
