2800MT of tuna with a market value of RM35 million can be caught in Malaysian waters in one year. The tuna industry has the potential to grow into one of the country's main Aquaculture exports. The Tuna Industry Development Strategic Plan 2020-2030 is being prepared to develop the tuna fishing industry as one of the country's new sources of wealth. The tuna industry in Malaysia can be classified as "Oceanic" which is found in the international oceans or Sabah and Labuan and the "Neritic". The Neritic category is a small-scale species caught domestically and in the exclusive economic zone area.
