Nigerian cocoa production is expected to fall by at least 20% this season, with measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 and drier weather increases the chances of a poor harvest.
The production of the last season 2019/20 had fallen to an estimate of 250,000 tonnes, lower than the forecast of the International Cocoa Organization of 260,000 tonnes.
Nigeria, the world's fifth-largest cocoa producer, has been hit by lockdown measures taken to slow the spread of the epidemic as farmers were unable to import inputs, while drier weather hampered pod formation.
